before we start

a few things to know before starting

patternmaking can feel overwhelming at first and that’s okay. this page is here to help you begin with clarity and confidence.

before you start using patternmaking 101, you’ll find a brief overview of what this platform is about, who it’s for, how the lessons work, and what you’ll need.

what is patternmaking 101?

patternmaking 101 is a learning space focused on understanding how clothes are built and how to draft patterns that fit real bodies

this platform is designed to help you:

  • learn the fundamentals of patternmaking step by step
  • understand fit, measurements, and basic construction
  • build a strong foundation you can reuse for many designs

this is not about shortcuts or mass produced sizing. the focus is on learning the why behind each step, so you can confidently create and adjust your own patterns.

you’re in the right place if…

patternmaking 101 is for you if:

  • you’re new to sewing or patternmaking and don’t know where to start
  • you want to learn how to draft patterns using your own measurements
  • you enjoy learning at your own pace and practicing along the way
  • you’re interested in building skills, not just finishing a single project

no prior patternmaking experience is required.

how the learning journey works

the content in patternmaking 101 is organized to build knowledge gradually.

you’ll start with:

  • basic concepts and terminology
  • body measurements and how to take them correctly
  • drafting blocks (bodice, skirt, sleeves, etc.)
  • moving into simple pattern manipulation and design

you can follow the lessons in order, or revisit sections whenever you need a refresher.

what you’ll be able to do after the basics

after completing the foundational sections, you’ll be able to:

  • take accurate body measurements
  • draft basic pattern blocks using your own measurements
  • understand how garments are shaped and fitted
  • make simple adjustments for better fit
  • approach sewing projects with more confidence and clarity

these skills become the base for everything you create later.
